Newsletter March 19th 2022

Some weeks ago a gentleman came into the store with a Riverside Yarns gift card that he had bought and no longer needed. He didn’t come in to exchange it, nor did he want a refund. He simply asked us to keep it at the counter, to be used as needed by other customers.

Time passed, and it so happened that one day a customer misjudged the cost of her purchase. ‘No worries’, we said, ‘we have a gift card here for just this exact purpose!’

Last week this same person came back in and purchased a new gift card. She didn’t put it in her purse. She quietly gave it back and asked that it be left at the counter, to be used as needed by others.

In the spirit of quiet kindness, there is a local project that a customer has brought to our attention:

Knitting for Neonates is a local group that donates hand-knit and crocheted baby garments to local hospitals. Right now there is a need for baby booties and mittens, as well as any leftover DK or fingering-weight yarn you might be able to donate. More information is available at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/199000804679502/permalink/682236006355977/
Not on Facebook? Please call the store for the contact information.

What's new at Riverside Yarns?

If you're looking for a new way to use up your yarn stash, why not try punch needling? This is a fun and creative way to add colour to your home -- you can make rugs, but also cushion covers, coasters and so much more.
Our Oxford Punch Needles are available in a regular point (for bulky/rug yarn) and fine point (for thinner, worsted weight yarn).  The set includes a decorative collector’s box, stitch gauge, and a handbook that explains all you'll need to know to start your rug-hooking adventures.

Get your punch needle set today and celebrate International Punch Needle Rug Hooking Day (IPNRHD) on Saturday, April 9.

If you love knitting and crocheting for wee ones, you'll be happy to know that we've restocked our Sirdar Yarns. We have plenty of colours available in Snuggly Crofter Baby and Snuggly DK.
And just in time for spring knits, we've restocked our selection of Snuggly Replay. This cotton/ acrylic blend knits up quickly and is an easy-care option for active kids.

We just can't get enough of the vibrant solids and lively colour combinations that Rhichard Devrieze comes up with. We have a great selection of his Peppino and Thede fingering, and Sirocco DK. Choose Peppino for graceful shawls, Thede for over-the-top socks, and Sirocco for stand-out sweaters and accessories.

Lights! Camera! Action!

Cathy and Shawna made their on-screen debut earlier this month when Riverside Yarns was featured in an episode of "It’s Happening Here with Lois and Diane". The show is a collaboration between Rogers Communications and the Owen Sound Chamber of Commerce, and features the people and places of
Owen Sound.
Hosts Lois Taylor and Diane Austin learned a few things about yarn, and the  cameraman did a great job showing off the store. Our thanks to producer/ cameraman Darryl van Slack for including RSY in this program.

Above left and right: We love the coziness of this foldable hat knit by Marie Donovan. She adapted it from a pattern that our customer, Johanna Brown, developed and generously gave to us to share with others.  Johanna’s pattern is written for fingering weight and Marie adapted it using Sirdar Jewelspun in an Aran weight.  The hat is perfect - it's super warm, with two thick layers and four layers over the ears!

Left: Socks by Marie Donovan in Austerman Step.
Lynda Norton has made a number of these lovely child's sweaters using Sirdar Crofter and Sirdar Crofter Baby. The pattern is a classic Sirdar design, Child's Pullover Sweater #2256, which is available on Ravelry.

Sandra Kilby knit up this Honeycomb Slip Stitch Slouch hat in Thede by Rhichard Devrieze, in the Eaton Street colourway. This is a great pattern available for free from Estelle Yarns. To find it, go to www.estelleyarns.com/EstellePatterns#
Top left: Jackie Hood used Pro Lana Uni and Pro Lana Kid Seta held double for this classic "No Frills" sweater by PetiteKnit.
Top right: Linda Gee happily shows off her latest pair of socks, done in Regia sock yarn.
Pat Wagter knit up this lovely "In the Grasslands" cardigan in Sirocco by Rhichard Devrieze. This is a great top-town design by Hintern Stein, and it really shows off the subtle colour variations of the hand-dyed yarn.
Barbara Smith added cables along the sleeves of this Bricks Sweater, which she knit with Estelle Alpaca Merino.  She had enough yarn left over to knit up a matching cabled toque. 'Jason's Cashmere Hat' is designed by Melissa Thomson. Both patterns are available for free on Ravelry.
Left:  Gordi is thrilled with this wonderful sweater that Susan knit for him in his favourite colours, using Cascade 220 Superwash. It is Anker's Sweater - My Boyfriend's Size, by PetiteKnit.
Right: Catherine Stewart used a clothes tree to show off all the socks (and one shawl) that she has knit in the last two years. "How do I get through a pandemic?" she writes. "One step at a time! Seventeen pairs on the tree, three pair given away and more on my dpn's." That's the spirit Catherine!
